The latest research suggests that long-term testosterone therapy is beneficial for men.
Regular readers of my blogs know that I like to expose the many myths and misconceptions about testosterone therapy. I have recently written pieces that disprove the link between testosterone replacement and heart disease and cancer.
The list of proven benefits of testosterone therapy for men continues to grow far longer than any of its perceived risks. One that persists, even among physicians that have been forced to accept the truth about testosterone therapy, is that such benefits are only achieved through short-term use. They believe that any risks associated with testosterone replacement, increase the longer the therapy is used.
According to a recent study, this too seems to be a myth that has been “busted.”

Should Testosterone Therapy be Given Without Interruption?
The study published in the medical journal, Clinical Endocrinology, concluded that “continuous long-term testosterone therapy for middle-aged and elderly men is beneficial.” The study looked at men who received supplemental testosterone every 12 weeks for a maximum of 11 years. A percentage of the men in the study had treatment suspended after about 65 months. They had no treatment for approximately 15 months, and then resumed treatment. The remaining men in the study had continuous testosterone replacement, without any interruption.
The study saw continuous improvement in lowering of body fat, weight, blood pressure, blood glucose levels, and C-reactive protein (an indicator of heart disease) in the men that never stopped therapy. Any similar gains were lost in the men that stopped testosterone replacement therapy. The researchers concluded that their data supports the uninterrupted testosterone therapy for men diagnosed with low testosterone.
