“Is Hormone Therapy Safe,” is probably one of the most commonly asked questions about hormone replacement therapy, or HRT.
If you are considering hormone therapy, of course it stands to reason that you want to know if it is safe. These questions come up since in recent years there has been a lot of conflicting information about the safety of HRT, and the benefits of hormone replacement vs its potential side effects.
Let’s try to set the record straight.
Hormone Therapy and the Risk of Cancer
One of the biggest concerns I encounter about hormone therapy has to do with the fear, particularly in women, that it can increase the risk of breast cancer. This fear was largely founded by the 2002 Women’s Health Initiative (WHI).
The WHI which studied women who were on HRT to treat menopause, reported an apparent link with HRT and an increased risk of developing breast cancer. In addition, the WHI also suggested that HRT could increase a woman’s risk of developing heart disease.
However, upon more recent analysis, the WHI study has been found to be flawed, and many of its conclusions, though well-meaning, are misguided. The WHI only studied one particular type of hormone therapy that used a combination of synthetic hormones. Therefore, its conclusions could not possibly apply to all women, who are engaged in various forms of hormone therapy, including Bioidentical Hormone Therapy, or BHRT.
BHRT, as we use it today is still the safest and most effective method we have to treat the most debilitating symptoms of menopause, such as mood swings, hot flashes, and night sweats.
Similar reports have dogged the use of HRT for men. It had been suggested that testosterone replacement therapy increased a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer, and heart disease. Both of these conclusions were also based on largely flawed research. In fact, the latest research involving testosterone therapy, suggests not only does it not increase a man’s risk of cancer or heart disease, but HRT for men may even lower the risk of heart disease and cancer!
Testosterone Therapy for Men
The biological fact is testosterone levels drop the older you get. We have known for years that testosterone therapy can help you to make up for what time and nature take away. However, much of the misinformation regarding testosterone replacement therapy have raised concerns and kept many men away from this life-changing procedure.
At HealthGAINS, it is one of our missions to change perceptions and calm men’s fears about testosterone therapy.
Unfortunately, your testosterone peaks in your 20’s. Then it is all downhill from there. Once you hit 40, you can really begin to see and feel the effects of low testosterone, also known as “Low-T.” Low-T can result in:
- A loss of sex drive
- A lack of vitality
- Weight gain, in particular, belly fat
- Loss of energy
- Reduced muscle mass
- Depression, anxiety and/or mood swings
Testosterone therapy can help. But testosterone therapy is only available with a doctor’s prescription.
The truth is when prescribed by certified and experienced hormone specialists, testosterone therapy is safe, and it can effectively return you to the man you once were – without increasing your risks of heart disease or cancer!
