New physician prescribed skin creams could be the solution women are looking for. Instead of just containing the ingredients found in over the counter skincare products, (like retinol, vitamins or peptides) these new products actually are a form of hormone therapy.
Female hormones are instrumental in keeping skin young and healthy. As many women age, the decrease in hormones can wreak havoc on the skin. Skincare is a multibillion dollar industry, but many of these creams and treatments really only offer surface or temporary results.
They ultimately can do nothing to replace the diminishing hormones that could be at the root of the problem.
Hormone Therapy and Skincare
Estrogen is essential for the production of collagen. Collagen is a protein that basically holds your body together. Without collagen, we would be like a bowl of Jell-O! Collagen is the foundation that gives skin its strength and elasticity.
As women age, estrogen levels decrease and collagen production decreases. This causes the sags, bags and wrinkles we usually associate with aging skin.
Research has found that more than 25% of skin collagen can be lost within the first five years during and immediately following menopause. They also found that it continues to drop after that.
However, several studies have found that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can slow, and in some cases even reverse, the process.
For example, a recent study published in the International Journal of Dermatology found that six months of applying a topical estrogen skin cream actually improved skin.
The cream made skin firmer and it also “decreased wrinkled depth and pore size between 61 and 100%.”
Putting estrogen in skincare products is not a new idea. Many of the major beauty and makeup manufacturers had marketed age-defying beauty creams containing synthetic estrogen in the 50’s and 60’s.
However, they were forced to stop when the FDA cracked down on these products. These new products use only bioidentical hormones instead of synthetic. Bioidentical hormones are made from all natural sources and are available only from doctors. They are similar to topical estrogen gels, prescribed by doctors for vaginal dryness.
Why Choose Bioidentical Hormone Therapy
Whether you are seeking hormone therapy for improved skin, to combat the symptoms of menopause, etc., bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is the most effective form of HRT.
As you may have gathered from the name, BHRT uses hormones made from all natural sources. They are exact duplicates as those made by your own body, which is especially important for women.
Studies have shown that the synthetic hormones like progestin, aren’t as effective as bioidentical progesterone. Do not be confused by the name! The terms “progestin” and “progesterone” are NOT the same thing!
Progesterone is the hormone that comes from all-natural sources. In fact, they’re molecularly identical to progesterone. Progestin is a synthetic hormone, created in a lab.
It has a chemical structure radically different from progesterone. It was so unique it was patentable under a unique name: progestin.
That’s the main issue with using synthetic hormones, they have been biochemically engineered to be unique. This makes it difficult for your body to recognize them.
These synthetic progestins can mimic some of the effects of real progesterone. However, progestins have been known to react differently with your body’s progesterone receptors.
In fact, there’s evidence that the targeted tissues for HRT don’t always react the same way to synthetic hormones. This is due to the different molecular structures that synthetic and bioidentical hormones have.
The only way to be sure you are receiving the safest and most effective course of hormone therapy is through the use of BHRT.
You can find out a lot more about the benefits of BHRT, and many other ways to age optimally in my new full length book, Great Gains For Life.
Have you or anyone you know tried any hormone therapy treatments? What were the results?
