Hormone Therapy also known as HRT, is still one of the most effective treatments we have for helping women deal with the most severe symptoms of menopause. As women approach and enter menopause, the familiar problems such as night sweats, hot flashes and mid swings, can all make life difficult.
Hormone therapy can help ease all of those menopausal problems. A new study suggests that HRT for women may have an additional benefit. Hormone Replacement Therapy could delay dementia
Hormones and Dementia
A new study has found that Women who have HRT in the form of supplemental estrogen before the start of menopause and for at least three years after its onset had “better preserved brain structure.”
Particularly, the researchers found that the hippocampus area of the brain in the women undergoing hormone therapy remained significantly larger, and more intact than in women who were not on HRT.
Degeneration of the hippocampus region of the brain is related to Alzheimer’s and other forms of senior dementia. The hippocampus is also known to have a high volume of estrogen receptors, so it makes sense that hormone therapy can help to keep this critical region of the brain healthy.
Women on hormone therapy for the other symptoms of menopause, have often remarked how it has also helped clear up the “foggy thinking” they have been experiencing since menopause.
Lead author of this latest study, Dr. Carl Pintzka of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) said, “[hormone replacement therapy] can have a positive effect against dementia if women start early enough with treatment.
Pintzka’s research echoes earlier studies that found that hormone therapy is good at lifting the “brain fog” that often accompanies menopause. A 2010 study published by the National Institute on Aging, concluded that if women starting taking supplemental hormones before their last period, cognitive skills improved, and “foggy thinking”, declined.
The fact that Pintzka also suggests that women start hormone therapy early is significant. It suggests that women should start therapy in the earliest phases of menopause, when they are younger and at the height of their professional careers. It may also delay dementia later in life, is an added bonus!
Other Benefits of Hormone Therapy
Hormone Therapy is not only for women. Both men and women can benefit from the physical, and indeed the cognitive benefits of hormone therapy.
Whether you are a man, or a woman, hormone therapy can:
- Help give you improved strength and vitality
- Increase your lean muscle and burn more fat
- Boost your energy levels
- Minimize moody behavior, combat depression
- Improve your libido and sexual wellness
To obtain the many mental, physical and emotional benefits of hormone replacement therapy, you need the right HRT program. The best HRT programs are designed to get all of your hormones back in balance.
So-called “normal” hormone levels vary from person to person. Properly administered hormone therapy looks at you as an individual, and takes your individual needs and lifestyle into account.
Hormone Therapy Beyond the Bedroom
When you think of hormone replacement, how it can improve your sex-life may come immediately to mind. But as the researchers with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology have discovered, there are many more benefits to hormone therapy.
While their research was directed at women, there have also been quite a few studies that have found how testosterone therapy for men can improve your “performance,” in, and out of the bedroom. These studies have shown that men with low testosterone are less successful, and earn lower incomes than men with consistently higher levels of testosterone.
