Current research suggests that a healthy sex life to a healthy heart leads, and vice versa.
There are two common myths that suggest:
- An overly exuberant sex life can lead to a heart attack,
- Men or women who have had a heart attack, or are known to have heart disease, should refrain from sexual activity.
Neither is entirely true. In 2012 the American Heart Association released a statement that said less than 1% of heart attacks could be attributed to sexual activity.
The American Heart Association also stated that a healthy sex life is generally safe for heart patients, unless otherwise specified by your doctor.
In fact, the reverse of those myths is actually true. A 2010 study published in the American Journal of Cardiology found that a healthy sex life can be good for your heart. That study found that men who had sex at least twice a week, were less likely to develop cardiovascular disease, than men of the same ages that reported only having sex once a month or less.
There have been several studies since then that not only corroborate these findings, but have found other heart healthy benefits of a healthy sex life!
Benefits of a Healthy Sex Life
The interesting thing about sex and heart health is they not only go hand in hand, the relationship goes both ways. If your heart is in good shape, you are likely to feel good, and strong, and therefore more likely to engage in an active and healthy sex life.
If you engage in frequent sexual activity, you are actually lowering your risk of heart disease.
Also, the same kinds of problems that can lead to plaque buildup in the coronary arteries, can also restrict blood flow to the sex organs, which negatively impact your sex life. This is particularly true of men, since diabetes and high blood pressure can lead to both heart disease and erectile dysfunction (ED).
Again, the reverse is also true, taking steps to reduce your risk of heart attack, such as:
- Adopting a Mediterranean style diet
- Increasing your level of exercise
- Reducing stress
- Minimizing your consumption of alcohol
- Smoking cessation
This will also lessen your likelihood of experiencing erectile dysfunction.
The healthy heart benefits of a healthy sex life are not only for men. Women’s hearts too benefit from a healthy sex life the same way they would from any aerobic activity.
A healthy sex life can lower blood pressure, reduce stress and improve emotional health. For women, it has been found that stress reduction and being in a secure and emotionally supportive relationship can reduce the risk of heart attack as much as lowering cholesterol or stopping smoking.
