Truthfully, married men often live longer than their single counterparts. Men, may be particularly surprised to find out that married men have a lower risk of heart disease and cancer, than those who remain single.
According to the National Center for Family and Marriage Research, “the difference between married and unmarried men are remarkable in terms of overall health and life expectancy.”
Why Do Married Men Live Longer?
It seems that married men live longer than single men is that they are typically happier and less stressed. Researchers believe that marriage is both a cause and a consequence of good health.
People that are generally better physically and emotionally fit, are more likely than those who are not, to get married in the first place.
Once they do marry, they are more likely to want to stay in good health for the benefit of their partners, especially once children come into the picture.
The researchers agree that married men typically live longer as a result of marriage. Mostly likely because married men tend to rely more on their spouses for emotional support than do women.
Studies show that for most men, once they get married, their wives become their primary source of companionship and emotional support.
If a woman has a problem or is feeling blue, she is far more likely to call a friend or a relative for help, than to rely on her husband. The research indicates that for men, the opposite is true.
There is another reason married men tend to live longer than singles. While some may refer to it as nagging, the truth is men can also count on their wives to help them get in shape, and stay in shape.
Women are more likely to encourage their spouses to adopt healthy behaviors like seeing their doctors, drinking less, quitting smoking, eating better, etc. Most single men do not have the benefit of such a “healthy conscience” living with them.
How to Age Optimally
If you are single, I am not suggesting you run out and get married just to try and live longer. However, if you are in a relationship, and you have been thinking about marriage, maybe this is just one more reason it may be time to pop the question.
However, single or married, there are many things you can and should be doing right now to age optimally.
Number one, you should eat less. The single most effective method we have right now to live longer is calorie reduction. In addition to eating less, of course you should eat better.
Include more fruits and vegetables in your diet, add more superfoods, cut down on fats, salt, processed foods, and inflammatory grains. In addition:
- Quit smoking
- Reduce alcohol consumption
- Reduce stress
- Get more sleep
- Exercise more
- Take vitamins and nutritional supplements
- Bring your hormone levels to optimized balance
