Are there advantages to compounded bioidentical hormones? Absolutely!
As a practicing physician who focuses a great deal on age-management, and particularly hormone optimization for women, I see many patients who need compounded bioidentical hormones or bioidentical replacement therapy (BHRT).
Women especially, who are dealing with the most debilitating symptoms of menopause, react very positively to custom compounded bioidentical hormone formulas tailored to their particular needs.
Men as well benefit from compounding. I have worked with compounding pharmacists to develop several sexual enhancement treatments for men.
Advantages of Compounded Bioidentical Hormones
As an age-management physician, I have come to realize over the years, that one size does not fit all when it comes to age optimization. Compounding allows me to customize medications that are personalized to the specific needs of a given patient. However, such customization is not the only advantage of compounded bioidentical hormones and other medications.
Other benefits include:
- They can be better tolerated and more easily absorbed by the body than traditional drugs
- They can be custom formulated to be administered in ways other than swallowing
- Dosages are much easier to adjust over the course of treatment
- Multiple prescription medications can be blended into a single dose, to improve effectiveness and ensure compliance
Optimizing Bioidentical Hormones
In my practice, the most common use of compounding is in the case of creating compounded bioidentical hormones.
As the name implies, these hormones are made from natural sources. They are the exact same hormones – molecule for molecule – as those your own body makes. This is as opposed to the synthetic hormones made by the big drug companies.
As you might imagine, bioidentical hormones are more readily absorbed by the body, and more effective than the synthetic hormones, which try to mimic those that the body makes.
Synthetic hormones are by their very nature, not the same thing as the hormones normally produced by the glands of your body. Your body therefore does not recognize them as harmless, and they have the potential of far more side-effects than bioidentical hormones.
Also, drug companies that make synthetic hormones are not doing so from the goodness of their collective corporate hearts, they are manufacturing them for a profit. Therefore it is in their best interest to come up with unusual formulations that they can patent. This is good for their investors, but not so good for your body. These unique formulations are even more unrecognizable to your body.
Compounded bioidentical hormones are exactly the same as the hormones produced by your endocrine system, and they can be specifically designed for what ails you!
